Proper technique is the gold standard of fitness
One inch.
What if we told you the slightest tweak in positioning could be a game-changer?
Well, it’s true.
If you’ve ever had a trainer reposition your arm or leg juuuuuust a smidge, only to discover that the exercise feels entirely different … then you know what we’re talking about.
Maybe you even said: “Oh, wow! That feels a lot harder!” or “I’ve done this thousands of times, and it’s never felt like this!”
Our trainers hear people say things like this all the time, which underscores just how important it is to use proper technique when you’re working out.
WHEN does technique matter?
Well, pretty much all the time. In fact, it can affect just about any kind of movement, including:
- Stretches and calisthenics
- Weight machines
- Free weights
- Cardio equipment
- Outdoor exercises like walking and jogging
WHY does technique matter?
Poor technique can impact the effectiveness of an exercise on a targeted muscle group, and it can increase the likelihood that you’ll suffer an injury, as well.
Consider this …
Suppose you’re 5-foot-2 and you decide to do a few sets on the leg extension machine. If the person before you was 6-foot-3, you’re going to have a lot of trouble.
However, a few simple adjustments to the machine can dramatically increase the likelihood that you’ll perform your reps correctly.
Remember: Going through the motions isn’t enough. If you want to achieve great results, you have to maximize the effectiveness of a movement by positioning your body correctly and using good posture.
Ultimately, technique is a game of inches, and a simple shift in the placement of your body or the angle of your feet can make a huge impact.
